Banner label sensors are compact units with quick response times

The SLE3 model of label sensor by Banner

Advanced Motion & Controls Ltd. provides a variety of Banner Engineering industrial solutions, including the SLE3 and SLU4 series of label scanners. These rugged, high-speed devices allow users to scan labels with compact LED or ultrasonic slot sensors, detecting the labels as machines apply them to items passing quickly through on automated production lines. Each model has a narrow slot between two arms with the emitter and receiver aligned mechanically for simpler installation.

Detecting transparent and opaque labels

These label scanners are recommended for label application, as well as heat-seal, fold, crease, double-sheet, or tape-splice detection. The fixed slot widths on these Banner solutions offer opposed-mode sensing to recognize individual labels or their paper backing as they are fed at high speeds through automated labeling machinery.

The SLE3 series is equipped with a high-intensity infrared LED, designed to penetrate thicker label backing paper and less sensitive to web flutter, which the SLU4 series employs ultrasonic technology instead of light. This allows each scanner to detect both transparent and opaque labels and identify differences in label thickness. The SLE3 model maximizes production time with its 35-microsecond response time for use with high-speed rewinders; meanwhile, the SLU4 can be installed with a 200-microsecond response time for use with other automated labeling applications.

The SLE3 has an oversized three-colour LED indicator that makes it easier to see the real-time performance of the sensor, even from long distances. The SLU4 sensor model, also available from Advanced Motion & Controls, features a bright OLED graphic display that includes an alphanumeric display, ten-bar contrast indicator, set and trigger point, and details regarding every detection mode.

Banner has designed each sensor to fit into compact spaces: the miniature SLE3 is only ten millimetres wide, while the SLU4 is 21.6 millimetres wide. Options are available with built-in two-metre cables or with quick-disconnect cable ports (four-pin M8 for the SLE3, four-pin M8 or five-pin M12 for the SLU4). Users can set up the SLE3 with a one-press (Set)(+) button and configure the SLU4 quickly with the OLED-display menus and three buttons.
